The Associated Press recently reported that nonprofit groups established to aid the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorism in the U.S. are struggling to stay open because they aren’t getting enough donations seven years later. They should stop struggling - and just close. The great irony of those who genuinely want to help people in need is that once they launch their organizations, they often don’t want to end them, even if the sad reason of their being is thankfully gone. Yet the best way to boost domestic and international aid organizations is to strive to make each and everyone relevant and effective — to professionalize the helping industry by acknowledging changed circumstances and shuttering the windows if appropriate.
